Snowy Plains

Jackie Winkowski  ~ Author

Currently living between Marquette and Gwinn, Michigan, Jackie Winkowski has remained in the U.P. her entire life out of love for its natural beauty and resources, sparseness of population, and opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. She believes we in the U.P. enjoy so many freedoms not to be taken for granted.

Jackie is of Finnish-Swedish descent; her grandparents were immigrants from Finland. She has been married for 20 years to her best friend Jim, a respiratory therapist at Bell Hospital. In 2010, after working 35 years in an office day job, she retired to devote more time to their business, Snowy Plains. Their business providing the dogsledding experiences and writing and publishing of Children’s sled dog books. Her books described as “heartwarming stories inspired by real dogs and true events.” She has never once conjured up a story to write – her fabulous husky sled dogs constantly tell their own tales and experience adventures worth sharing. Jackie simply puts the stories on paper. The dogs and natural beauty surrounding her home are perfect subjects for the photography which graces the covers and accompanies the text.

For seven years she has written her stories using her laptop computer, when in the right mood; she sometimes has to think like a child, or even a dog. Most of the photography in her books are her own, though her husband Jim has contributed, as have talented local photographers; such as, Aladino Mandoli of Ishpeming, NMU student Lisa Dietzen, Lake Superior Photo, and a few others. Jackie designs the covers and interior layout herself and ensures that the actual printing is done in the U.S.A.

She hopes that sharing the stories, which are filled with life lessons, will make a positive difference in children’s lives and inspire them. Presenting the stories to groups of children and dog lovers of all ages, and to fully engage these audiences and see the smiles on people’s faces, is most rewarding to her. Her philosophy in life shine through naturally in her stories, which are inspired by real dogs and true events, and they are: “Always do your best.” “Try, try again.” “Believe in yourself.” “Find victories in everyday life.” “Place others before yourself.” and “Be kind to animals.”
