Mavis Farr-Smentkowski

Jewelry Artist

Mavis Farr-Smentkowski’s interests range from gardening and photography to music and dancing. Her passion and inspiration for her jewelry, however, stems from the same source: her daughter. A person of many pursuits, Farr-Smentkowski’s BA in liberal studies / literature and painting reflects her desire to always be in search of fresh inspiration. Though born in Detroit, Farr-Smentkowski has been living in the U.P. since 1994, and she delights in the fact that she gets to create Made in Michigan products. Her custom stamped transformational jewelry represents an alternative to the written word. Whether it’s poetry, simple phrases or loves notes stamped on metal, Farr-Smentkowski says that her pieces allow people to celebrate, honor and memorialize. In addition to creating custom jewelry, Farr-Smentkowski teaches jewelry and metal working workshops.

Farr-Smentkowski gathers precious metals from recycled sources. No metal used in her jewelry has been newly mined. Using locally reclaimed copper and brass, Farr-Smentkowski begins with a sketch, an inspiring strand of beads or a new tool. From copper birch earrings to a pet I.D., Farr-Smentkowski takes special pride in her custom work and is often inspired by the ideas that her customers bring her.
