Kathryn Lund Johnson

As a child Kathryn Lund Johnson noticed in nature what others had not, showed curiosity while others moved along. Her time spent in the Upper Peninsula in her youth greatly impacted her and influenced the photographs she’s been taking for the past 12 years. Johnson graduated from Western Michigan University with a BS in Occupational Therapy, after which she worked as a therapist for a Grand Rapids hospital and rehabilitation center as well as for a downstate school district. It wasn’t until 12 years ago, when a stunning wildflower caught her eye, that photography unexpectedly entered her life. The same curiosity Johnson expressed in her childhood was now translated into a curiosity for wildflowers. Johnson proceeded to photograph the flowers as a means to document and identify them. When she recognized how strong some of her photos were she enrolled in a series of Larry West Nature Photography workshops. It was here that Johnson adopted West’s philosophy: Process not product. She carries this philosophy with her whenever she’s out in her element, always remembering to first and foremost appreciate and respect the environment surrounding her. Now, with her time split between Gun Lake in Lower Michigan (she spends just a quarter of the year here) and overlooking Lake Superior near AuTrain, Johnson focuses on capturing the ever-changing natural world, her goal being to pique others’ curiosity and deepen her viewers’ respect for nature.

Johnson uses a Nikon N90S 35mm camera, a Nikon D90 digital or a FujiFilm Finepix J250 when capturing her subjects. To create her note cards, she uses an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 dedicated photo printer. Johnson prints on high quality luster photo paper, and all subjects are identified on the backs of the cards. Each note card is placed in a protective clear biodegradable sleeve. In addition to her photography work, Johnson has had articles printed in such publications as “The American Gardener” and “Northern Woodlands.”
