Erik Coursey Design

Working for five years as a project coordinator for various architecture firms, Erik Coursey felt the desire for something more. His career path at the time didn’t offer very much opportunity in working with his hands, so Erik decided to go back to school. Finding a better place for his desire to create, Erik Graduated in 2010 with a BFA in Furniture Design from the School of Art and Design at Northern Michigan University, Marquette, MI. He since has started his own design business; Erik Coursey Design.

Erik designs furniture and wall decor using wood media. He enjoys the warm feel of wood, the unique grain patterns, and the ability wood affords him to precisely manipulate it. His background in architectural design tends to influence him in creating artwork that is straight-lined, repetative, and reminiscent of buildings from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco time periods. He gets pleasure in creating series of work that use a common language, which challenge him to see how far he can push the boundaries of creativety by adhering to a limited amount of criteria.

Having lived mostly in the state of Michigan, he has lived in other states, including; Illinois, Nevada, Colorado, and Florida. But Erik’s formative years were growing up in Marquette, MI and he absolutely loved it, so he and his wife decided to return to Upper Michigan to start raising a family. They now reside in Skandia.
